<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-large;">U</span>nforeseen consequences were the heartburn of life, the jellyfish sting during a swim in the ocean, a paper cut from a love letter.</span><br />
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As Finn Wager sat across from Hope on the bus to Revelations, he felt like a hero. He cradled Theodor’s pocket watch in the web of his fingers, Mike and Wendy’s souls contained inside. He’d saved them from Hell, and soon his friends would be safely back inside their bodies. Once that happened, Hope and Ms. D would have no choice but to welcome him home to Revelations with open arms. Everything he’d done, all the sacrifices and risks he’d taken, would make sense to them considering his ultimate goal.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But when the bus passed between the twin dragons that guarded the gate to Veil Island and Revelations Institute, everything took a turn for the unexpected. Although the familiar sifting of his soul had produced a small amount of discomfort in the past, this time it caused him heart-stopping pain. He gripped his chest and sent a pleading glance in Hope’s direction. But what could she do? A million pins impaled him, accompanied by the fading of his flesh. His cells came apart, swept backward through the dark electric tunnel of the bus’s magic portal.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">He’d been rejected. The dragons that guarded the gate to Veil Island allowed only Soulkeepers inside. But Finn <i>was</i> a Soulkeeper. He had passed inspection before. Both the angel Gabriel and Hope had confirmed his status as a Horseman. What had changed? And where was he going?</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A voice in his head, the kind that kept a person awake at night mulling over the things they should or shouldn’t have done, called to mind the ruined tree in the cemetery and the spells he’d used to turn it into a portal to Nod, spells he’d bound like enchanted tattoos to every square inch of his flesh. When he re-formed in the heart of the cemetery in New Orleans, the one he’d pictured in his mind, those tattoos were still pulsing and burning in the wake of his travels. He wasn’t sure exactly why he’d been rejected, but one thing was clear:</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">He wasn’t a Soulkeeper anymore.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“Ignite!” Theodor’s tone, high-pitched and frantic, reverberated off the surrounding tombs. Finn reoriented himself to face the tree. At a run, he wove between the graves, reaching his mentor in a few quick strides.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Theodor had vowed to destroy the tree hours ago and the bridge between worlds it represented. In Lucifer’s hands, it could reconnect the Devil with the source of his power. But the twisting branches of the ancient oak remained stubbornly intact. Despite the magician’s spells, the bark resisted any damage.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“What’s wrong? Why isn’t it burning?” Finn asked.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Theodor whirled, his shiny dress shoes kicking up loose gravel. The magician always wore the same black tuxedo. Usually, this formal attire, along with his waxy complexion and stoic personality, served to camouflage his reaction to whatever trouble he encountered. Not today. The magician had broken a sweat, and his usually impassive expression looked strained by exhaustion and frustration.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“Finn! I thought you were taking the pocket watch back to Revelations.” He glanced at his wrist. “You’re almost out of time.”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“The watch is still on its way.” Finn hesitated, but there was no hiding from the truth. “The guardians at the gate to Veil Island rejected me. I guess I’m not a Soulkeeper anymore.”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Theodor stilled, assessing him. One of his cards flipped over his knuckles and between his fingers. “No. I don’t think so. From what I’ve learned, being a Soulkeeper is genetic. It cannot be taken from you. I suspect it is your skin that was rejected by the guardians, and since you cannot harmlessly be separated from it, your entire body was transported here.”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“So, Ms. D was telling the truth. The symbols are an affront to God and nature.” Finn’s heart pounded, his anger rising like a red tide. “Great. That’s just great.”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“Some of the symbols. Not all.” Theodor took a deep breath. He gestured toward the tree. “I suspect the portal has something to do with it as well. This wasn’t supposed to happen. I’d intended my spell to transport me once, open and shut. Not to build a bridge between worlds.”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“You don’t say,” Finn snapped. “It seems as if a magician with your level of experience would realize this was a bad idea. Or that placing a binding spell in my skin might corrupt more than my flesh.” He held out his arms. “When exactly were you going to warn me about the consequences of what we did, Theodor?”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Theodor lowered his chin. “I did warn you, Finn. And by what you’ve told me, Hope and Victoria warned you as well. Your choices were your own. Don’t deny it.”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Finn pointed at Theodor’s chest. “I had no choice. I had to save Mike and Wendy, not to mention your sorry ass.”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“Mike and Wendy may be the reason for your choice,” Theodor said. “But a choice you did have. You made it. I made it. And now we are paying the price.” He tugged at the sleeve of his tuxedo. The thing looked new again, although it had been scorched at the collar and cuffs only a few hours ago. Nothing but magic explained its freshly laundered state. “Now, help me destroy this tree before the consequences become much, much worse.”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">With more grumbling than was necessary, Finn approached his side. “What have you tried so far?”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Theodor held up half his deck.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“Let’s try again. We’ll be stronger together,” Finn said. Side by side they tried to ignite the tree, then eviscerate it, then reduce it to dust. Methodically, they worked their way through Theodor’s deck, trying every spell with any hope of ending the bridge. Nothing worked.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“It must be resistant to magic,” Theodor said. “All magic.”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Finn arched an eyebrow at his mentor. “You’re a genius.” With a snap of his fingers, he conjured a chainsaw and pulled the cord, firing it up. “Nothing magic about this.” Finn lowered the blade to the base of the tree, but no matter how hard he pressed, he couldn’t even nick the trunk.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“It’s not working,” he said, sending the chainsaw back to where it came from.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“Only a blessing can break a curse,” a smooth voice said.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Finn and Theodor pivoted to find Damian Bordeaux glowing behind them like some kind of white-winged lighthouse. “How would you know?” Finn asked. “You’ve had your nose up the Devil’s ass for centuries. Excuse me if I don’t trust that the goose feathers and incandescence you’re putting off isn’t a highly tuned illusion.”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“Can’t you feel it, Finn? This tree is cursed. It’s surrounded by dark energy. Even the roots under our feet are cursed. Only divine intervention can undo the damage. I can show you.” He pointed at the tree. “I can do it.”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Finn groaned. “We don’t need your—”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“Please!” Theodor said, cupping his hand over Finn’s mouth. “We would appreciate your help.”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Damien stepped forward and raised his hands toward the heavens. Finn pushed Theodor’s hand away and curled his lip in disgust as the angel mumbled a prayer that made him glow more brightly. Where did this guy get off playing the angel after what he’d done to Hope? When he was still a fallen angel, he’d deceived her, played with her emotions. And now, he acted like those actions occurred in the distant past rather than days ago. Redeemed or not, he should have to pay for his crimes. Finn’s only recompense was that the guy was barred from Revelations too. No angels allowed. Only Soulkeepers.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Glowing like a star, Damien lowered his hands toward the bark but stopped short when the tree began to change. A human-shaped knot formed like a cancer on the trunk. Damien hesitated, as confused as Finn about what was happening.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“Theodor, what is that?” Finn asked.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“I-I don’t know. There was no one else where I was,” Theodor said. “Damien, finish this! Nothing good can come from the other side of that bark.”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But he was too late. Like a pimple popping, the bark split and a blur of hot pink hair whooshed past the angel. In a flash, Kirsa’s fist connected with Finn’s jaw. Theodor cast a card toward her, and she froze, her hand reaching for Finn’s throat. Finn ran to Theodor’s side.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“That won’t hold.” Theodor shook his head. He turned Damien back toward the tree. “Continue. Don’t stop, no matter what.”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The angel made no comment as he began again, raising his hands toward the sky.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Finn regarded Kirsa in her temporary catatonic state. “What was she doing in the tree?” Finn asked, his skin prickling.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“I don’t know.” Theodor smoothed his mustache.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“But… this means something,” Finn pressed. “Kirsa has been helping Lucifer for weeks. If she’s here, it means Lucifer has been here too! He must have sent her through. That’s why she wasn’t with him and Ravenguard at the warehouse.”</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“Lucifer can’t set foot on hallowed ground,” Theodor said. But the words seemed to tempt fate. A dark fog rolled into the cemetery and coalesced on the pebbled pathway a few feet in front of them: Lucifer and Ravenguard.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“Correction, this <i>was</i> hallowed ground. Now it’s mine.” Lucifer raised his hands and released a pulse of dark energy toward the tree. Damien swiveled but couldn’t dodge the blast in time. Pummeled by Lucifer’s power, he broke apart into a spray of shimmering light that rained down at the base of the tree.</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“No!” Finn yelled. He’d never been a fan of Damien’s, but he didn’t want him dead. How would he explain this to Hope? How else would they fix the tree?</span></div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Reflexively, Finn shielded himself while Theodor’s hand gripped his arm. He had a heartbeat to digest that Lucifer had raised his hands again and the look on his face was pure death. And then they were gone, incorporeal and traveling through space at Theodor’s direction. Finn didn’t know where the magician was taking him, but he knew this: they’d failed. Lucifer now had access to the bridge to Nod.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; text-indent: 0.3in;">
</div>
<div style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 28.8px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Wherever they were going, he needed to find a way to contact Hope. Finn and Theodor had made a mistake, and the greatest consequences were still to come.</span></div>

<span style="color: black;">I</span><span style="color: black;">'ve heard it said before that publishing a book is a lot like having a baby. The long months of preparation, the final push to get it out into the world, the feelings of vulnerability the first time your story leaves your sweaty hands.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica;">As the mother of two, I can tell you unequivocally that this analogy this is pure poppycock. Birthing babies is a painful and messy business that is at least 300 times more difficult than publishing a book and comes with a lifetime of responsibility. Still, I agree with the sentiment. There comes a time to let go and see if your baby book can fly. Today, is that day for Hope's Promise.</span></div>
<div style="color: #7f8c8d; font-family: Helvetica; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="color: black;">I am so excited to share this book with you. I love Hope's Promise for its twisty plot and surprising characters. I hope you will too.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: small;">About Hope's Promise </span></h2>
<div style="line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
Hope Laudner has never loved the idea of being God's tool. After all, she's grown up with expectations far beyond what any teenager deserves to bear. But she's finally accepted her fate, and after being partially responsible for raising Lucifer, she's committed to using all of her power to correct her mistake and send him back where he belongs.</div>
<div style="line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
Lucifer has other ideas. He knows of a dagger, forged in Hell, that can kill Hope permanently, and in doing so, also break God's curse over him. The only problem is, the last fallen angel, Damien, has it and he's not keen to give it up.</div>
<div style="line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
Between slaying demons, Hope and the Soulkeeper team strive to find the dagger before Lucifer does. But Hope finds much more than she bargained for. </div>

WHEN EVIL IS THE ENEMY, POWER IS A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND.</h2>

Now that she’s fully accepted her role, Hope takes up the mantle of Healer to lead a new team of untrained Soulkeepers. Repurposing Revelations to be a training ground won’t be easy, not when the source of its power has been disrupted, and the only woman who knows the island’s secrets is on her deathbed. <br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Time isn’t on Hope’s side. Lucifer is on the move, injured and unable to return to Hell. He’s found a way to amass power by consuming human souls. Worse, if he grows strong enough to get his hands on an ancient weapon before Hope does, everything the Soulkeepers fought for could be undone. <br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Sinister plots, unlikely allies, and old temptations plague the new team. Can Hope’s promise lead them to victory? Or will her inexperience doom them all?</div>

I recently sent out a G.P. Ching newsletter with some exciting announcements about a new book series coming in the Soulkeepers world.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><i>Did you get it?</i></b></span></div>
<br />
Due to some technical changes behind the scenes, I'm afraid we've lost data on a few subscribers. If you wanted to receive my newsletter and didn't, please check your spam folder. Adding genevieve [@] gpching [.] com to your address book can keep it out of there in the future.<br />
<br />
If you thought you signed up but didn't get the email at all, you can access it <a href="http://eepurl.com/bBOJ6L" target="_blank">here</a> and sign up again using the <a href="http://hyperurl.co/GPChingNewsletter" target="_blank">link</a>.<br />
<br />
I'll be sending out a free gift this holiday season to subscribers and want to make sure the fans who want it, get it!<br />
<br />
Oh, and there is also information inside about my new reader/reviewer group to discuss YA Fantasy novels.<br />
<br />
Have a great weekend!Genevieve Jackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16178276724159826428noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8940048629088010526.post-12309970895120458172015-07-07T09:53:00.002-05:002015-07-07T09:53:48.097-05:00Rave reviews for the Grounded Trilogy!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This year, however, we're adding something that takes the pitch of excitement to a whole new level.<br /><br />Writer's Digest has created a new mentoring program that we'll be offering to one lucky conference attendee selected at random. That person will be announced as our first ever Writer's Digest mentee. <strong>For the next year, we'll provide that writer with a host of FREE educational tools, services, and more—all designed to help the recipient achieve his or her writing goals.</strong><br /><br /><strong>Here's what the mentee receives:</strong><br /><ul>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial; text-indent: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif;">I'm featuring an excerpt of a story I started a while back and didn’t finish. But it's something you haven't read before, and I know I haven't mentioned it to anyone. It's been sitting patiently in my TBW (To Be Written) pile. haha<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial; text-indent: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">If you’ve read my books, you know I’m a huge romantic. This excerpt is about a young girl named Kate, who has been bitten by a Vampire Prince named Tristan, in</span><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;"> his attempt to keep her safe from the other clans. Her life is in danger because of a certain "problem" which I am not mentioning. And, of course there is a "connection" between her and Tristan. The problem is… she must seal the bond by drinking his blood. But doing so will forever bind her to him and his clan. She’s seventeen and doesn’t want to be bound by anyone, especially someone she doesn't know. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial; text-indent: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">I love the characters in this story, and hope you will too. This story will be releasing at the end of this year. </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">So, without further ado, here is the excerpt for Quintessence. </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">FYI: the title might change. I had to come up with something on the spot.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial; text-indent: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif;">And PLEASE remember this is a very ROUGH draft, and not near being edited, and this is NOT the beginning of the story. With that being said... enjoy!</span></span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">Excerpt:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">Sitting at the bar was a well-dressed, fairly handsome young man who looked out of place. He turned and gave me a smile so I quickly made my way over and sat on the barstool next to him.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“Hi,” I greeted, hoping he would give me a sign he was my contact. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“Well, hi. What brings you to this pig sty, beautiful?” His words slurred and his eyes were bloodshot and droopy.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">My conscience waved a huge red flag, smacking it upside my head. <i>Dammit.</i> This guy was <i>not </i>my contact, and now I’d opened myself up to the rest of the drunken riff-raff. I could feel the lustful eyes violating my backside.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“I’m meeting someone,” I answered.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">The bartender, a tall man with a bald head and tattoos running down his neck and arms, stood in front of me. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“Aren’t you a little young to be in here, darlin’?” he asked. “We could get in a lot of trouble servin’ alcohol to a minor.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“I’m not here for the drinks. I’m here to meet someone,” I replied, trying to subdue my inner shaking.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“Who would ask you to meet them in a shit hole like this?” he questioned, shaking his head. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“I don’t know,” I sighed. “I was just thinking the same thing.” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">The bartender gave a half-smile, shrugged, and walked off to serve a drunk pounding on the end of the bar table.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">Heavy footsteps clanked across the wood floor and stopped directly behind me, and soon I caught a whiff of strong body odor. My heart hammered against my chest, sensing trouble. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">I wasn’t going to turn around. Nope. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“Hey precious.” A strong hand grasped my shoulder, forcing me to turn back. “You’re new here. You lookin’ for a good time?” Three large, bearded and burly men stood behind me, completely plastered. Their wasted eyes held looks of evil intentions. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“No. I’m waiting for a friend. A very large<i> male </i>friend, who will be here any minute,” I answered as bravely as I could, praying my words were true. “I think I’ll wait outside.” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">They laughed, calling my bluff. I started to scoot off of the stool but the man’s grip tightened on my shoulder, keeping me in place.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“Hey Bill, why don’t you let the little lady go,” the bartender suggested, drying a freshly washed glass. Bill glared at him, making him turn and walk away. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“We don’t want you to leave, precious,” Bill slurred. Spittle flew from his mouth onto my face as he said <i>precious</i>. My insides shuddered. “We’ll show you a real good time.” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">His breath, a mixture of alcohol and bar food, invaded my nostrils. Vomit threatened to force itself up my throat, but I swallowed hard to keep it down. Stepping into this place was a horrible mistake. Tristan lied to me. Bastard. But it was complete stupidity on my part for putting my trust in someone I didn’t know.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“I just want to leave,” I said, attempting to release the man’s fingers from my shoulder, but he was too strong.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“Hey dumb shits!” a voice yelled from behind them. All three brawny men twisted their huge heads, but I couldn’t see who they were looking at. Their girth blocked any visual. “The girl is with me. I suggest you let her go before someone gets hurt.” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“Who the hell are you, asshole?” Bill spit his words, his steel grip still attached to my shoulder.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“I’m her bodyguard, and if you don’t get your filthy, vile hand off of her, I’ll break it into pieces,” the mysterious voice answered.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<i><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">My bodyguard?<o:p></o:p></span></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">The men burst into laughter. Bill smugly and slowly threatened, “I’d like to see you try.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">In a split second I heard the sickening snapping of bones. The two men next to Bill were on the floor, curled into fetal positions, crying in pain. Bill’s grip finally released, and with a pained yelp he fell to his knees grasping his limp, broken hand. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<i><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">What the hell?</span></i><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;"> I didn’t see anyone touch him. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“Let’s say we ditch this joint,” a soft voice whispered in my ear. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">I turned, my breath caught in my throat. A handsome young man, who looked a little older than me, held his hand out. He was around six feet tall, with the clearest blue eyes. Jet-black hair was clean cut and drawn back, but there were a few misplaced strands which fell over his strong-featured, pale, porcelain face. Black jeans and a black long-sleeved shirt hugged the defined the muscles bulging from underneath. He reminded me of Tristan.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">I grasped his hand, and he led me out the door into the nearby forest. We traveled in silence for a while before he spoke.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“My name is Stefan. Tristan sent me in case you chose not to complete the bond. I’m sorry I was late,” he said. His voice was melodic, and he had an English accent.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“Thank you. It’s fine. I mean, I’m fine, so it’s… fine.” I stumbled through my words. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<i><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">Oh God. I sounded like an idiot.</span></i><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">A grin formed on his full lips.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“Where are we going?” I questioned. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“To a safe place. You’ll meet the rest of the team Tristan sent to aid you. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“He sent a team?” I squeaked.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“Yes, and tomorrow you begin training. Tristan has been gathering information on the charges against your grandfather. He wants you to know he’ll do his best to try and keep your family safe, but his hands are somewhat tied without the bond.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">“You know about the bond?” I asked.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">He stopped, and then turned to face me. “Everyone under the Vladu Clan knows about the bond. Tristan is our Prince, therefore, if you ever decide to seal the bond with him, you will become our princess.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial;">
<i><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 32px;">Wow. That was a lot to swallow.<o:p></o:p></span></i></div>

<i>Book 1 in the Grounded Trilogy</i></h3>
<div>
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Seventeen year old Lydia Troyer is far from concerned with science or politics. Growing up behind a concrete wall in the exiled community of Hemlock Hollow, life hasn't changed much since her Amish ancestors came to America. She milks her cow by hand, makes fresh bread every morning, and hopes to be courted by a boy she’s known since childhood. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-size: x-small;">But when Lydia's father has a stroke and is rushed to the outside world for medical treatment, Lydia poses as an Englisher and leaves Hemlock Hollow. An ordinary light switch thrusts her into a new world where energy is a coveted commodity and revelations about her personal history have life threatening consequences.</span></div>

The second edition of Grounded is approximately 20,000 words longer and contains new details and chapters about The Green Republic and The Liberty Party. While the overall story arc is the same, the first version was written as a stand alone while the second was written as the basis of the trilogy. So, while you may understand book 2 after reading the original version of book 1, some details have changed and will not match up exactly.</div>

Recently, I switched my paperback distribution to go through Createspace for distribution to Amazon and Lightning Source for distribution everywhere else. I didn't come up with this idea on my own. As a member of the Alliance of Independent Authors (Alli), I'd heard this was the recommended way to go, but to be honest, I didn't fully understand the benefits until I took the plunge. Now that I have, I'm getting lots of questions about the move. Here's what you should know.<br />
<br />
First, this post applies to self-published authors who:<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>Use their own ISBNs or want to use their own ISBNs</li>
<li>Regularly sell paperbacks at venues other than Amazon</li>
<li>Have a few hundred dollars in capital to invest in the move</li>
<li>Don't change their paperbacks often</li>
</ol>
<br />
If these three things don't apply to you, stop reading and go directly to Createspace. Createspace is by far the cheapest and most user friendly way to deliver POD to your customers.<br />
<br />
As the owner of Carpe Luna publishing, I started with using Createspace only but soon was selling enough via expanded distribution to notice the disparity in royalties between Createspace to Amazon and Createspace to all other channels. To illustrate, let's take a book priced at $12.99, 340 pages, Black and white with Cream interior. Here's the royalty breakdown at Createspace.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif8vKMLsoIcoSV8ARux1Mhcvy7Hp7PsLDMhHKtSShF-o9bf4WJIG_XDy4dyAGwZCG9XhyZVeidzuC8069yz_c9VlIKI9_M7ZVp1HeF01Euj9g3Z2J_KHvYu-dgqExOFxWMOMEhcizZSGc/s1600/Createspace.tiff" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif8vKMLsoIcoSV8ARux1Mhcvy7Hp7PsLDMhHKtSShF-o9bf4WJIG_XDy4dyAGwZCG9XhyZVeidzuC8069yz_c9VlIKI9_M7ZVp1HeF01Euj9g3Z2J_KHvYu-dgqExOFxWMOMEhcizZSGc/s1600/Createspace.tiff" height="472" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Now, the line I want you to focus on is "Expanded Distribution". This author is earning only a quarter for every sale ANYWHERE other than Amazon. And-- here's the part that really opened my eyes--when anyone orders a paperback through another retailer, like say Barnes and Noble, that order is going through Createspace to Lightning Source to be fulfilled. Plus, because I wanted my paperbacks published with my own ISBNs because I am my own publishing company, Createspace would limit my choices for expanded distribution. Eventually, going directly through Lightning Source had more appeal to me.<br />
<br />
Lightning Source distributes everywhere that is included in Creatspace expanded distribution. Let's see the royalty model for Lightning Source for the same book. Same specifications but LS gives you one additional benefit, you can change your discount. Here, I've calculated using the minimum discount of 20%, but you can select up to 55%.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCmMB8V_SHwfFjZuaTBk8q280deko5wo4eRqSGN2QsM8LcRZwlFyNMkkomBXWrwAIBuccf-AfDY2Kj8HALt0Q1KRyqxOlP3Iq0_YlRPdkTAmiIi7SQmByUQfACAZqUBsdQT-dTt04TyzE/s1600/LS.tiff" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCmMB8V_SHwfFjZuaTBk8q280deko5wo4eRqSGN2QsM8LcRZwlFyNMkkomBXWrwAIBuccf-AfDY2Kj8HALt0Q1KRyqxOlP3Iq0_YlRPdkTAmiIi7SQmByUQfACAZqUBsdQT-dTt04TyzE/s1600/LS.tiff" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, we've gone from earning a quarter per book to $5 per book, or even at the full 55% discount 50 cents per book. (When I switched over, I chose 35% which made my royalties about the same as selling on Amazon).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Publishing through Lightning Source isn't free. It's $75 set-up cost per title and $30 if you order a physical proof. ( I'm comfortable using their digital proofer). In addition, any time you make a change to the cover or interior, it's going to cost you $40, so make sure your books are in a semi-permenant state before publishing. But here's an over-simplified break even:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(LS Profit) (Sales) = $105</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
5(X) = $105</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
X= 21</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At the minimum discount, you will break even if you sell around 21 books of each title (Or more or less depending on your price, discount, pages, and if you get a physical proof). After 23 books, your profits will have exceeded what you might have earned using Createspace during that period of time. For me, thats doable, so this made sense. In addition, I don't plan to touch my interiors or covers for at least a year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Why not just use LS? Createspace is faster to Amazon and free. It's a good way to go with newer titles that you know you are going to change. Plus, you can use the same ISBN in both places as long as you have never used that ISBN before for expanded distribution.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When you upload to Createspace, simply do not select the expanded distribution channel.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Some things you should remember about Lightning Source:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>You must apply and be approved as a publisher</li>
<li>You must purchase and use your own ISBNs</li>
<li>Don't make mistakes because changing things will cost you</li>
<li>The user interface isn't as easy to use as Createspace and so you may want to find a friend to help you through the first go round.</li>
<li>The cover and interior requirements are slightly different, so I recommend using a professional designer and formatter if you go this direction. An LS format will work at Createspace but not necessarily the other way around. Color requirements on the covers are slightly different and LS paper is slightly thicker, so you will need a separate version of the cover from your artist.</li>
<li>Make certain you select "Non returnable" during setup to create a true POD </li>
</ol>
<div>
Again, not for everyone, but I'm glad I made the switch! </div>

Producer Aaron Magnani has optioned the screen rights to author G.P. Ching's popular young adult book series “The Soulkeepers,” TheWrap has learned.<br />
<br />
In the six-book series, Heaven and Hell wage a war for human souls. A teenager named Jacob becomes an unlikely hero as he realizes he has the genetic predisposition to be a Soulkeeper — a gifted warrior with the power to protect humans from fallen angels. The only problem is that he's a hot-headed vandal and a skeptic. It'll take a beautiful neighbor who's more than what she seems to teach him the truth about faith, loyalty, love and redemption. <a href="http://www.thewrap.com/g-p-chings-soulkeepers-book-series-heading-to-the-big-screen/" target="_blank">Read more...</a><br />

<strong><i><span style="font-family: Helvetica;">Earlier this year, I became a member of the Authors Guild. I wanted to be a part of this organization because I feel they promote author welfare like no other, especially on the legal front. This morning I found this in my inbox with a message asking me to share it. I'm interested in your thoughts on the content. If you agree with the content, you should join the Authors Guild to support their cause. <u>But, more importantly, if you DON'T agree with the content, maybe you should join, too.</u> Because this organization calls itself the "Authoritative Voice of American Writers", and if all types of American writers don't join, their voices won't be heard.</span></i></strong></div>

<strong><br /></strong></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">
<strong>An Open Letter to My Fellow Authors</strong><br /><br />It’s all changing, right before our eyes. Not just publishing, but the writing life itself, our ability to make a living from authorship. Even in the best of times, which these are not, most writers have to supplement their writing incomes by teaching, or throwing up sheet-rock, or cage fighting. It wasn’t always so, but for the last two decades I’ve lived the life most writers dream of: I write novels and stories, as well as the occasional screenplay, and every now and then I hit the road for a week or two and give talks. In short, I’m one of the blessed, and not just in terms of my occupation. My health is good, my children grown, their educations paid for. I’m sixty-four, which sucks, but it also means that nothing that happens in publishing—for good or ill—is going to affect me nearly as much as it affects younger writers, especially those who haven’t made their names yet. Even if the e-price of my next novel is $1.99, I won’t have to go back to cage fighting.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">
Still, if it turns out that I’ve enjoyed the best the writing life has to offer, that those who follow, even the most brilliant, will have to settle for less, that won’t make me happy and I suspect it won’t cheer other writers who’ve been as fortunate as I. It’s these writers, in particular, that I’m addressing here. Not everyone believes, as I do, that the writing life is endangered by the downward pressure of e-book pricing, by the relentless, ongoing erosion of copyright protection, by the scorched-earth capitalism of companies like Google and Amazon, by spineless publishers who won’t stand up to them, by the “information wants to be free” crowd who believe that art should be cheap or free and treated as a commodity, by internet search engines who are all too happy to direct people to on-line sites that sell pirated (read “stolen”) books, and even by militant librarians who see no reason why they shouldn’t be able to “lend” our e-books without restriction. But those of us who <em>are</em> alarmed by these trends have a duty, I think, to defend and protect the writing life that’s been good to us, not just on behalf of younger writers who will not have our advantages if we don’t, but also on behalf of readers, whose imaginative lives will be diminished if authorship becomes untenable as a profession.<br /><br />I know, I know. Some insist that there’s never been a better time to be an author. Self-publishing has democratized the process, they argue, and authors can now earn royalties of up to seventy percent, where once we had to settle for what traditional publishers told us was our share. Anecdotal evidence is marshaled in support of this view (statistical evidence to follow). Those of us who are alarmed, we’re told, are, well, alarmists. Time will tell who’s right, but surely it can’t be a good idea for writers to stand on the sidelines while our collective fate is decided by others. Especially when we consider who those others are. Entities like Google and Apple and Amazon are rich and powerful enough to influence governments, and every day they demonstrate their willingness to wield that enormous power. Books and authors are a tiny but not insignificant part of the larger battle being waged between these companies, a battleground that includes the movie, music, and newspaper industries. I think it’s fair to say that to a greater or lesser degree, those other industries have all gotten their asses kicked, just as we’re getting ours kicked now. And not just in the courts. Somehow, we’re even losing the war for hearts and minds. When we defend copyright, we’re seen as greedy. When we justly sue, we’re seen as litigious. When we attempt to defend the physical book and stores that sell them, we’re seen as Luddites. Our altruism, when we’re able to summon it, is too often seen as self-serving.<br /><br />But here’s the thing. What the Apples and Googles and Amazons and Netflixes of the world all have in common (in addition to their quest for world domination), is that they’re all starved for content, and for that they need us. Which means we have a say in all this. Everything in the digital age may feel new and may seem to operate under new rules, but the conversation about the relationship between art and commerce is age-old, and artists must be part of it. To that end we’d do well to speak with one voice, though it’s here we demonstrate our greatest weakness. Writers are notoriously independent cusses, hard to wrangle. We spend our mostly solitary days filling up blank pieces of paper with words. We must like it that way, or we wouldn’t do it. But while it’s pretty to think that our odd way of life will endure, there’s no guarantee. The writing life is ours to defend. Protecting it also happens to be the mission of the Authors Guild, which I myself did not join until last year, when the light switch in my cave finally got tripped. Are you a member? If not, please consider becoming one. We’re badly outgunned and in need of reinforcements. If the writing life has done well by you, as it has by me, here’s your chance to return the favor. Do it now, because there’s such a thing as being too late.<br /><br />Richard Russo<br />December 2013</div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Fair warning, this post might get ugly. That’s because I’m
talking about the green-eyed monster today. Not Godzilla but something far, far
worse. </span><br />

<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"> I’ve never blogged about it before, but I’ve observed
hideous author behavior over the last couple of years, some of it directed at

practices to achieve that?</i><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I don’t think
that’s jealousy. Real jealousy is when an author takes an action to sabotage

<b><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Five Reasons You Should Avoid The Green-eyed Monster</span></b></div>

<li><b style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">Success begets success.</b><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-indent: -0.25in;"> Good writing in all genres attracts interest in that genre. A good angel book gets readers interested in buying more angel books. The Hunger Games launched a huge following for dystopian. Sabotaging books like your own only sabotages YOU.</span></li>
<li><b style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">Scheming Undermines Learning</b><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-weight: bold; text-indent: -0.25in;">. </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">All that time you are spending to feed the green monster could be time spent writing your next book or reading a book on craft. The green monster is a huge time waster.</span></li>
<li><b style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">No one defines your success but you</b><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">. If you are not happy with yourself selling 300 books per month, you won’t be happy selling 30,000 per month. Self satisfaction comes from within, from knowing how much of yourself you poured into a book and how far you've come.</span></li>
<li><b style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">You miss out on being a part of someone else’s success</b><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">. It’s a great feeling to watch someone you know really blossom. Even better if you get to be the wind beneath their wings.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-indent: -0.25in;"><b>It may come back to haunt you.</b> Amazon and others are getting much better at tracking inappropriate activity. No one wants their name associated with an article like this after all. www.forbes.com/sites/suwcharmananderson/2012/08/28/fake-reviews-amazons-rotten-core/</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-indent: -0.25in;"> </span></li>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi3cPV2SigGgi7TcxmVfSjhFWnzLmgqYKXMAC0zzrYwAxDn5sgj2IJFLzkB0F1-X8RDUaB-cAXrwNLrHyoeCD2QiV467LgEB7LpcIXg5lnpZ94eIE0neyBIo0j5cjUneoxsjCZ31gaJOo/s1600/diamond-ring-440013-m.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="171" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi3cPV2SigGgi7TcxmVfSjhFWnzLmgqYKXMAC0zzrYwAxDn5sgj2IJFLzkB0F1-X8RDUaB-cAXrwNLrHyoeCD2QiV467LgEB7LpcIXg5lnpZ94eIE0neyBIo0j5cjUneoxsjCZ31gaJOo/s200/diamond-ring-440013-m.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
Every year, I inevitably find myself in a social situation where the question is posed, "What do you want for Christmas?" Every year, inevitably, someone in the group will say, "jewelry." This always leads to a discussion about why jewelry will never make my list and why I choose not to wear much of it, even though I can afford it. Truth is, my husband knows better than to buy it for me!<br />
<br />
I get it. I know. That feeling of longing when you see a woman with a truly stunning piece of jewelry, a diamond the size of a golf ball or a necklace that would fit in comfortably with the crown jewels. We've been conditioned to think that gems are a good investment that convey love and permanence in a relationship, and the bigger the gem the bigger the love, right? Wrong. So wrong! And ladies, you are the only ones who are going to change the perpetuation of the myths around jewelry.<br />
<br />
<b>Myth #1: Jewelry is a good investment</b><br />
<br />
Sorry, no. Most jewelry is marked up at every stage in the production and distribution process to well above its actual value. Diamonds especially depreciate significantly the moment you leave the store. The only exception might be the well timed purchase of gold, but most jewelry you wear isn't a pure enough gold for you to see a return on your investment. (Source: <a href="http://helpdesk.blogs.money.cnn.com/2012/06/08/what-makes-jewelry-a-good-investment/">CNN Money</a>)<br />
<br />
<b>Myth #2: Jewelry shows an investment in the relationship</b><br />
<br />
There are much better ways to show you are invested in a relationship than jewelry. Jewelry is a "one and done" gift. He gives it to you and then walks away. On your finger or around your neck, it acts as a repellent to others who might be interested in you, but the jewelry does not have an equal effect on your man. Compare this to a gift of an <i><span style="font-size: large;"><b>experience</b></span></i>, like concert tickets. <span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">Concert tickets require planning for the future and thinking about your likes and dislikes. Concert tickets mean he really believes he will still be with you a month from now when Beyonce comes to town and that he recognizes that you love Beyonce (even if he doesn't).</span> Plus, going to that concert will create a shared experience that you can talk about for a lifetime. In fact, research shows that people who buy <i>experiences</i> rather than <i>stuff</i> are generally happier. (<a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/hbsworkingknowledge/2013/08/05/want-to-buy-happiness-purchase-an-experience/">Source: Forbes)</a><br />
<br />
<b>Myth #3: Jewelry doesn't hurt anyone…</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Hey, it's just a fashion choice with sentimental value, and it's not hurting anyone, right? Well…truth is it might be. Gems are mined. Mining is both bad for the environment and often employs unsafe working conditions and child labor. Plus, have you heard of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_diamond">blood diamonds</a>? Diamonds are sometimes used to finance conflict and social injustice around the world and to launder money. In a jewelry store, you can't tell which diamonds have dirty little secrets behind them and the sales person isn't going to know.<br />
<br />
Full disclosure, I do have a small diamond in my wedding ring (one purchased before I knew about blood diamonds) and each girl in my family has a special, matching platinum necklace with heavy sentimental value.<b> I don't judge people who wear jewelry and often admire artistically designed pieces</b>. But for the reasons mentioned above, my jewelry purchases are few and far between, and much more conscientious than they used to be.<br />
<br />
And jewelry is not on my Christmas list.<br />

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Rules. Balance. Consequences. War. </span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;" />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">When Fate gave Dane the water from Eden to drink, she did more than save his life. She changed his destiny. </span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;" />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Since the beginning, a covenant between God and Lucifer has maintained a tenuous peace, balancing Soulkeepers and Watchers and the natural order of things. Dane upset that balance the day he became a Soulkeeper. Fate broke the rules. </span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;" />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Now, Lucifer is demanding a consequence, requiring Fate to pay the ultimate price for her involvement. God intervenes on the immortal’s behalf but in order to save her soul must dissolve the covenant and with it the rules, order, and balance that have kept the peace. A challenge is issued. A contest for human souls begins. And the stakes? Earth. Winner take all. </span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;" />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">The Soulkeepers are at the center of a war between Heaven and Hell, and this time nobody, anywhere, is safe from Lucifer’s reach.</span><br />
